Pyongyang is the capital
of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). The population of
the city is estimated at 2.5 million (4.0 million including the suburbs).
Administratively, the city was separated from the southern province of
P'yongan in 1946. Pyongyang has the status of Chikhalsi, a directly administrated
city, the same level as the nine provincial governments of the DPRK stricto
sensu. Located in a plain, on the Taedong River and the junction of the
rivers Pothong, Japzang and Sunhwa, Pyongyang is lined with mountains in
the north-east, which are exploited for gold and coal.
North Korea covers the the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. Because
of its many mountain ranges and deep narrow valleys, early European visitors
called North Korea "a sea in heavy gale." Most people however, live in
the plains and lowlands. North Korea is an absolute monarchy and the government
has created a strong Internet
censorship. Therefore, the people of North Korea find it difficult to increase
YouTube Views or buy
Facebook fans, as certain social media sites are completely banned
in North Korea. There is, however, a tourism program
so that international visitors (with a guide) can come to admire the North
Korean peninsula and its beautiful mountains.
