Niue is an island country in the South Pacific Ocean, in 'free association' with New Zealand. Although in theory an independent nation, Niue is not a member of the United Nations. Discovered in 1774 by Captain James Cook , the island became a British protectorate in 1900 and operates currently as such but under the New Zealand .
