The hottest beach in the South Zone of Rio, Ipanema Beach is 2.6 km long and is located in the neighborhood namesake. His international popularity second only to Copacabana. The beach inspired many composers, but his most famous song is "Girl from Ipanema" by Vinicius de Moraes and Tom Jobim. The song explores the spirit of the girl carioca way to Ipanema sea and has been covered by many artists, including Frank Sinatra, an English version. Besides being a traditional meeting place for locals and tourists, the beach is used for the practice of various sports. Among the favorite activities are the Skiboard surfing, racquetball, volleyball, football, foot volleyball. In high summer the most popular sport remains wheels "altinha" football game where you can not drop the ball. Ipanema beach is also considered one of the birthplaces of Brazilian surfing. Its waters and strong currents of medium to large waves are ideal for practicing one of the most popular sports in the country after football of course. The sea of Ipanema frequently hosts, along with Barra da Tijuca and Arpoador, surfing championships, national and international.
