Seat of the municipality (concelho) Tarrafal is a 'city' (cidade) - a status conferred automatically on all seats of municipalities since 2010. Two km to the south, near the village of Chao Bom, is the famous Tarrafal camp, opened in 1937 and closed in 1974 following the Carnations' coup d'etat in Portugal. Tarrafal is in the northern part of the road that connects Assomada to Praia. There another road that connects Tarrafal the northernmost point of the Santiago island, Ponta Moreia. |
