It is dedicated to various artistic and temporary exhibitions, as well as housing collections of painting and sculpture. As a former Guatemalan government headquarters, was declared of Historic and Artistic interest in 1980 and in 2001 it became part of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Guatemala. After three failed attempts to erect a National Palace in Guatemala City, one of which ended up destroyed by fire in 1925 and was popularly called the 'Cardboard Palace', president Jorge Ubico began a new building was begun in 1939, completed in 1943, designed by architect Rafael Perez. The inauguration took place on November 10 of that year. |
