West Papua Niugini / Irian Jaya / Papua Ocidental - flag. Papua, formerly known as Irian Jaya. Papua has vast oil and mineral reserves. But it remains under-developed, with its people leading a traditional and basic existence. Dutch kept control of province when Indonesia gained independence in 1940.  Annexed by Indonesia in 1963. Its people are Melanesians, while the majority of Indonesians are Malays. Guerrillas of the Free Papua Movement (OPM) are fighting for independence while the political struggle is advanced by the Papuan Presidium Council (PDP). images of
