| Venice is the main city
in the Veneto, capital of the homonymous province and the Veneto region.
It is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The city is located, along
with numerous small islands in the lagoon of Venice, in the northwestern
part of the Adriatic Sea. It counts 270.000 inhabitants, of which about
60,000 in the city itself, about 180,000 in the mainland city of Mestre
and Marghera and about 30,000 in the various islands of its lagoon. Historically
known as "la Serenissima" or "la Dominante", it was for more than a millennium
the capital of the Republic of Venice. It is built on the Venetian lagoon,
on the Venice gulf and is 28 km from Treviso and about 30 from Padua. The
historic city has always been isolated from the mainland, until in 1841
began work on the construction of the railway bridge to reach the station
of Saint Lucia. Trains began to arrive in Venice in January 1846. In order
to reach by car you had to wait until 1933, when Mussolini inaugurated
the Liberty Bridge, 4 km long, connecting Mestre at Piazzale Roma. The
municipality includes, in addition to the Venice lagoon and the islands,
a large portion of continental land including Mestre and Porto Marghera,
with its vast industrial hub.
