The hotel panorama in Baku is slowly improving. Many hotels have been open to private capital and subsequently refurbished, some building has taken place as well. In these hotels quality ranges from average to superb. Competition is still incipient, prices are rather high, as most clients are oil industry related. The remaining are state owned hotels, which still operate in the Soviet model, with a little spice of local mafia. Any comments on the service offered by these hotels would be superfluous. Many hotels have very visible and intruding security. In Azerbaijan the word privacy does not mean much.

Small and medium size hotels can offer good rates if you book directly. Bookings with larger hotels are usually best made through the many available reservations sites, unless you have a corporate account. Catering to a large extent to a business clientele, Baku lacks good mid range or tourist oriented hotels. To compensate it has a wide offer of apartments for short-term rental. Ask the local travel agencies - you can rent a city centre apartment for less than 40 Euros per day.

If you need to stay outside Baku, the quality of accommodation is often dismal. Slowly a few private hotels are opening and things are getting better, there's even a Caribbean style resort, the Khazar Golden Beach Hotel in Sahil beach, Mardakan (see the bottom of this page for hotels in other cities). In the countryside you can stay in 'Turbazas', which are simply huts with few or no amenities.
